Memorial Day Weekend!

Memorial Day is not only a day of remembrance to all those men & women who gave the ultimate sacrifice, but it is also the kick off to Summer and a weekend we always try to get together with friends and family. This weekend we got to do both and not only did we have fun in the hot, hot, sun, we also got a ton more work done on our backyard expansion project!

On Sunday we headed south to our friends new house.  Now that they have a house with a BIG back yard, they were able to host us for the first time.  We enjoyed fun in the sun, good food, and great company!

The Momma's got to sit and sip margaritas while the boys all played a game of kickball!
Love these boys!

Ready to head home and go to bed!
Sunday was our "funday" but it was back to work on Monday, only this time we were getting some reinforcements!  The Doc and I were able to make a dent on Saturday while the boys hung out in their kiddie pool, but there is only so much the two of us can do while keeping an eye on them.  It's nice to have the help from our family.

We had 3 chain saws going on Monday and got most of the fallen down trees all cut and ready to be stacked.  My brothers loaded up the truck with more wood and helped burn a lot more brush, clearing another one of the big piles we had!  And with my sister, SIL Kim and mom I was able to forget I had children for the day and concentrate on my helping with the brush.  Still have lots to do, but it's really starting to look like a yard and not a big giant mess!

Mud puddle in the cleared area is KNEE deep for my brother John.
My Dad, finished all the trees in the back corner
While Jesse took care of the trees by the swamp!
It was a great weekend and I hope that everyone enjoyed their kick off to Summer just as much as we did!

Project 365 - Day 148

It's getting easier! I'm thinking by the time these 8 boys (aged 6 1/2 and under) are in high school is when we'll get them all to look at the camera and smile nicely. Until now, they keep things fresh and interesting. Today it took a chorus of Twinkle Little Star and ABC's to get them all to sit still, but at least they all stayed!

Project 365 - Day 146

This morning at 10 minutes before my alarm was set to go off to get the boys ready for school, David comes into our room with a piece of paper. He started talking about how he followed the directions, drew a skeleton and what not, I'm not quite sure, I was still waking up. As it turns out, he got a book from school about skeletons and bones and drew his own version following the directions in the book. I'm pretty sure I don't want to know what time he woke up to work on this drawing.

Once my eyes adjusted to being awake I was quite impressed, I mean check out the detail on the rib cage! He spent all morning talking about his drawing, and asked if he could bring it to school to show his teacher and friends. And I wanted to make sure this one was in the memory books (as David now refers to my pictures!), so we made sure to snap a quick image.

Making a House a Home - Pretty Flowers

And no more snarly mess on our sledding hill and rock wall! Last fall we attempted to rid the hill in our backyard of the awful shrubbery on our own and it was such a pain! It took us 3 weekend days to do just half of the hill so this spring we got a quote on the job and it was well worth the money to hire a professional! The landscaper came in and not only finished the rest of the hill, but he also got rid of the nasty shrubs on the rock wall on the side of the house, and it only took him and his helper a little more than 1/2 a day!

Goodbye rock wall shrubbery nonsense! I still can't seem to find a before picture and I forgot to take one before the landscapers came. But trust me, it was a MESS!

And now it's beautiful! The iris is not only a beautiful flower, but it has special meaning for the Doc and I, it was our wedding flower!

I also picked up a couple hanging plants to decorate various spots in my garden until we are able to figure out how we want to arrange it.

Today I got back out in the back to clear more brush! Just when you think you have made a big dent, you go farther back into the old wooded area and see just how far we still have to go. But I keep plugging away when I can and we'll get reinforcements again this holiday when my family comes up for a Memorial Day cookout and brush clearing party!

It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it! Check out how grimy I am after a days work*.

Project 365 - Day 144

A turtle in our driveway! After putting Evan to bed, David and Shaun headed outside with Daddy to practice some more hitting off the T. I sat down to my computer to load today's image (which was going to be a picture of Evan with frosting on his face!) when David came running inside telling me they found a turtle!

I followed him outside with my camera to see about getting a picture. David told Daddy he wanted a picture of the turtle "to keep for a memory"! And that buddy, is EXACTLY why I do this!

Project 365 - Day 138

Since we no longer had the snarly mess on the rock wall, it was recommended to us that we plant something there to let people know that there is a wall/drop off. There is also the issue of moving that area, especially so close to the edge of the wall. MIL came up today and we decided to take a drive over to a local nursery to look around. We headed over to the perennials because I wanted something that would come back each year, and that is when I saw these beautiful iris's. The iris was our wedding flower and now I have them in my garden! They look so beautiful, I think we're going to get a couple more!

Project 365 - Day 137

No more snarly mess on the rock wall! I cannot wait to see it when the grass grows in.  I wasn't really on top of things and didn't get my before picture, I'm sure I have one somewhere I just need to dig.  In any case it was a big huge mess and not something Charlie and I were interested in spending our weekends working on.  Last Fall it took us a good 3 weekend days to get half of the hill cleared, loamed and seeded.  The landscapers came in today and finished the rest of the hill and this rock wall in a little over a 1/2 a day!  Sometimes it's worth paying the professionals!

Project 365 - Day 135

Everything is great everything is grand
I got the whole wide world in the palm of my hand...

TWO 2 weeks ago...

And he's ready to start learning how to drive! His new obsession is getting behind the drivers wheel instead of climbing into his car seat!

Evan has been TWO for 2 weeks now and last week he went for his 2 year check up! He's doing great and still the biggest biggest of all 3 kids!

Evan's 2 year Stats:

Height: 35 inches (70th percentile!!)
Weight: 31.2 pounds (85th percentile)

David was only in the 25th percentiles and Shaun in the 50th. I thought it was interesting to note that David at 2, was 33 inches, Shaun was 34 inches and Evan is 35 inches. So David still continues to be the shortest even though he is the oldest! Shaun is already wearing the clothes that David wore last summer.

Happy Mother's Day!

What a wonderful Mother's Day! Since the Doc had to work this weekend, I decided that I didn't want to spend Mother's Day alone and invited the family over for brunch! Everyone contributed and together we had a great breakfast spread, of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles, pancakes, muffins, fruit salad, and I even tried out (thanks to pinterest!) some red velvet pancakes, which I was told were excellent!

After everyone enjoyed some delicious food, it was time to get on our work clothes and get out into the yard to do some more work. My Dad, was able to get a lot of the hard wood out in the old wooded area cut up, Jesse loaded the truck with another load of wood to take back to my parents house and my brothers and I got a fire going and cleared the rest of the huge pile of brush! Looks like we might not need to rent that chipper after all!  And while all that was going on MIL & my mom tidied up the kitchen, while my sister and Kim helped keep the children from wandering the neighborhood!

By the end of the day I was dirty and covered in pine pitch, my legs continue to get scratched up and I even had the joy of pulling a tick off the back of my neck (eww!), but I'm keeping my eye on the prize. Soon all our hard work will pay off and we'll have a gorgeous back yard oasis!

I hope that all the Mom's had just as wonderful a day as I did, celebrating with my boys and my family!

Tough Guys...working hard today out in the sun today!!

Edit June 5, 2012

June's I Heart Faces challenge is All Boy! I immediately thought if this image I took on Mother's Day. My family came over for brunch and then to help us with our major backyard expansion project. It was a very hot day for May and we had a bonfire going to burn all the brush, so the "big" boys (my two brothers!) took off their shirts to stay cool, which meant the "little" boys wanted to do the same. How could I not get a picture of that! Click on the button below to check out the amazing entries featuring BOYS!!

Project 365 - Day 132

An early Mother's Day gift from David. Last week his teacher told us to send them to school in "messy" clothes because they were going to be working on a special project! Now I know why. David insisted that I open it today because it needed to be watered.
